Platte County Sheriff Warns of Potential Flooding

The Army Corps of Engineers plan to increase the release of water from an up-river reservoir in South Dakota will more than likely cause flooding in the area, Platte County officials warned today. And not surprisingly, the oft-flooded downtown area of Parkville is once again in danger of being submerged.

Captain Mark Owen, Platte County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management, has been notified by the National Weather Service and the Army Corps of Engineers that portions of Platte County are likely to experience flooding by the Missouri River in the near future.  The Corps of Engineers plans to increase the release of water from the Gavin’s Points Reservoir in South Dakota beginning now until at least mid July.

Park University Dean Survives Joplin Tornado

By Rachel Atwood

Park University’s School of Business Dean Brad Kleindl, was at his Joplin, MO home when the highest-rated EF5 tornado touched down on Sunday afternoon.

Kleindl told The Luminary that he was sitting on his porch when he heard the second round of sirens and noticed a massive change in weather patterns.

“Something big was coming,” he said.

It was at that point Kleindl took his family to the basement where they waited until the storm had passed. By the time he was able to get an Internet connection that evening, Kleindl was stunned by what he saw on a live feed video from The Weather Channel.

Every child has a dream of being left at the amusement park just a little bit longer than everyone else. While one revolution on a tilt-a-whirl is enough to make most adults hurl, to the kids it’s always too short a ride.

Ready for the Rapture?

I don’t for one second believe that the world is going to end on May 21, 2011, as Christian fundie Howard Camping predicts. I do know this: if the forecast calls for brimstone while I live in my Westport neighborhood, I’m going to my friend Jim’s house.

FISHER IS THE MAN

Christopher Fisher assumes the position.
(Rachel Atwood / Luminary Photograph)
Ending weeks of speculation, the Parkville Board of Alderman tonight approved the appointment of Christopher Fisher as Ward 3 Alderman.

Fisher, 41, is a partner at the Bryan Cave law firm where he specializes in real estate development law and banking. A resident of The National, this is the first time he has held a public office.

Fisher replaces Jeff Bay who resigned his post at the end of April, citing residency concerns. Bay had moved from the Ward and resigned under pressure following a period of media scrutiny. Stating the desire to be as transparent as possible, Mayor Gerry Richardson did not appoint Fisher outright, instead choosing to interview candidates at a special work session of the Board before tonight's regularly scheduled meeting.

Richardson then recommended Fisher to the board due primarily to the fact that he was a practicing attorney and the Board currently did not have a lawyer among their ranks. Both Bay and recently ousted Ward 3 Marvin Ferguson were attorneys. In comments to the Board, Fisher said he would focus on real estate development and issues of commerce and pledged transparency at City Hall. After the work session was completed, the Board entered a special session where Mayor Richardson nominated Fisher for appointment. He was approved in a unanimous vote.

CLARB STALLS RECYCLING DEAL: Aldermen Will Pursue Issue

By Mark Vasto and Rachel Atwood

Seeking to build on the extraordinary success of recent local recycling initiatives, several downtown merchants, local waste haulers and the Ripple Glass company are eyeing Parkville’s historic downtown for a potential receptacle site but the city’s Community Land and Recreation Board (CLARB) isn’t receptive -- at least not yet.

As previously reported in The Luminary, Ripple Glass CEO Stacia Stelk has expressed interest in expanding their glass recycling efforts in Parkville. The company, an initiative started by Boulevard Brewing, has more than 80 drop off locations primarily south of the river but their Parkville site, located just across Gomer’s Fine Wines and Liquors in the Parkville Commons, is the third largest collection site for the company.

According to numbers provided to The Luminary, the Gomer’s site, maintained by Gomer’s owner Tom Stacey, has recycled more than 270 tons of glass since its inception a little more than a year ago.

Steve Youngblood: Farewell to Uganda, Part 2

Note: This is the last of two parts which conclude my farewell to Uganda. See entry for April 28 for Part 1.

ENTEBBE, UGANDA—Winston Churchill famously dubbed Uganda “the pearl of Africa”. For the casual observer or tourist, this moniker is easy to dismiss, given Uganda’s many warts—bad roads, rampant corruption, political unrest and violence, etc.

After trying to figure out these last 10 months what Churchill was talking about, it’s finally dawned on me: Uganda is a pearl, a gem, because of its people.

With one exception, the Ugandans I’ve met during my stay here have been warm, welcoming, and wonderful. The exception is the man who sold me my car, a Mitsubishi Lemon which was the worst vehicle ever manufactured in the northern hemisphere. My dream for you, Mr. McRipoff, is an eternity of nighttimes plagued by angry, biting forest ants, the kind that instinctively attack a victim’s nether regions.

BRAVEST SUFFER COLLISION NEAR PLATTE CITY

From the Platte County Sheriff's Office:

The Platte County Sheriff's Office Crash Team is currently investigating a motor vehicle crash that occurred while the Central Platte Fire Protection District was responding to a reported structure fire at 4:08 am.  The crash occurred in the 15000 block of HH Hwy when two Central Platte Fire trucks collided head-on.  There were 3 occupants in each of the two trucks.  Five of the firefighters sustained severe/non-life threatening injuries.  One was taken by air ambulance and the others by ground ambulance for treatment of injuries at area hospitals.  The structure fire was extinguished without any additional injuries.

THE INSIDE STORY

A FAQ and ANALYSIS of the Recently Reported Corruption at City Hall
PART 1: The Shannon Thompson / Lore Meyer / Mayor PR Issue

Introduction:
During my historic run at Turner Broadcasting, I once asked my producer why we overdubbed in English the comments of the indigenous people we were covering. Why didn't we use subtitles?

She turned to me, head cocked to the side and eyes narrowed as if she was wondering if everything she ever thought about me was suddenly wrong.

"Because we speak English, man," was her reply. She was a photojournalist and film director who took great pains to make every shot count...why would she want people reading during her film?

Years later, after reading over a series of articles about pollution I had written, she shook her head.

"Too many numbers," she said. "MEGO."

When I asked what that meant, she said it had dual meaning. As an acronym it meant "my eyes glaze over," and as a viewer or, in this case reader, "me go (onto the next channel or story)."

A few weeks ago, an outside reporter told me that I would be very surprised to learn about what his investigation would uncover. I responded that he would be very surprised to learn that I would not be surprised. In the end, we complemented one another in the fact that while he came in dropping bombs and did some good reporting and affected change, he affords The Luminary to provide deeper context -- which we will do here, in this three part series.

But beware all ye who venture past this point...there be numbers past the break...don't say we  didn't warn you.

Steve Youngblood: Ugandan Journalist Survives Riots

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — On the same day that I arrived in South Africa to teach and tour, my Ugandan “sister”, Gloria, almost died.

When I read her tale below, I was flooded me with emotions—anger, fear, and relief among them. This is the story, in her own words (edited for length and style), of how she got caught up in rioting in Kampala and narrowly missed being seriously injured or even killed.

“It all started with an early morning trip to do everything (errands) on Friday…As we entered town from Entebbe road, …we saw people running for their lives. Police patrol cars started moving in different directions and all of a sudden our taxi came to stop and we came out of the car. I told Peggy it would be safer to walk into a bank. We did this smartly (quickly) as I could not run very far, I lost all the energy, We entered a bank thinking it was the safest place and after about 30 minutes the situation got very tense and the bank manger came and chased us out. This is downtown Kampala where all the hooligans reside.
