Farley-Beverly Flood Prep Begins

Sandbag efforts began this morning at the Farley Levee District, located about 20 minutes north of Parkville, spanning areas from Beverly through Leavenworth. The town is bracing for possible flooding due to releases upstream and rainfall over the weekend in the Missouri Basin which have caused additional rise in the Missouri River.

They are asking for local volunteers from Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm each day. Volunteers should sign in at Hills Brother Construction located at 92hwy and 45 hwy in Beverly. Presently it is estimated that the Farley Levee group has filled 10,000 sand bags.  A determination on the need for additional volunteers past Friday will be made later in the week. In the meantime, the Missouri Department of Corrections has brought 15 inmates from the facility in St Joseph, Missouri to assist with sandbagging operations.

Former branch manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Farley resident, Bobby Kincaid has been in contact with emergency management on a daily basis. Kincaid is optimistic about the strength of the levee, "I expect it to hold unless that water gets tremendously high."

The Army Corp of Engineers has personnel monitoring the river from Kansas City to the northern Buchanan County border.  Air operations conducted by the Corp of Engineers, such as the helicopter witnessed last Friday in Parkville, continue to monitor the levee system.
